Rally Fails To Draw Anticipated Participants, Government's Openness Shines

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- The rally organised by the opposition parties and pro-opposition non-governmental organisations (NG0) at the Merdeka Stadium today failed to draw the anticipated participation, especially among the fence sitters.

It was also obvious that the majority of the participants of the rally, dubbed the 'One Million People's Uprising Rally', comprised only members and supporters of the opposition parties and NGO, hence making it not more than just a political party assembly.

The organiser's high hopes that the rally would be participated by hundreds of thousands of people who support their cause were crushed when only 45,000 people attended the rally.

Between the Merdeka Stadium and the larger National Stadium in Bukit Jalil offered by the authority, the organiser opted for the former which has only 30,000 seats and a field that can only accommodate around 15,000 people.

And despite the fact that the rally took place on a weekend, the city dwellers still chose to stroll in public places and go shopping in view of the Chinese New Year celebration next month.
