Selangor Government Should Stop Blaming Others Over Water Crisis - Najib

SEMENYIH, Jan 12 (Bernama)-- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today took to task the Selangor government for blaming others over the water crisis in the Klang Valley.

He said he was saddened and dissapointed to see the people living in the Klang Valley burdened by the crisis, especially flat residents who had to carry water to their homes to meet their daily needs.

"I am saddened to see people living in flats having to lift buckets of water to the upper floors. Two flight of stairs might not be so bad, what if 10 floors? It might not be a heavy burden for the young, but what if they are elderly people. It's just making life difficult for the people.

"They (Selangor government) are busy pointing fingers and blaming Syabas (the water concessionaire in Selangor) and the Barisan Nasional (BN) government for the crisis, but this is not the way, this is not the time. We want to blame others, what does that mean?

"Solve the water problem of the people. We (BN) cannot because they (Selangor government) won't give the development order (for the Langat 2 water treament plant which is needed to avert water crises in the Klang Valley). We want to open additional pumping stations, they also don't give approval," he said.

Najib said this at a "Meet-the-People" event organised by the Indian Progressive Front (IPF) at Dataran Tesco here.

He said what the Pakatan-led Selangor government should do was to work together with the federal government to overcome water supply problems in the Klang Valley and Selangor as a whole, saying if the matter was not addressed urgently, the situation was expected to get worse in future.

"What will happen in 2014, when a more serious water disaster is likely to happen in our country, especially in the Klang Valley, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, if we do not solve this water problem.

"Water is a fundamental right of every human being, getting acess to quality water. We guarantee this, give the mandate to the BN (in the upcoming election), we will solve the water problem as soon as we can. We are not playing politics," he said.

Najib also said development and investment in the state had also become stunted due water supply problems.

"We are aware potential investments in the billions in Selangor may not take off if the water problem is not resolved. Investors are waiting to open factories in Selangor but are postponing their projects because of this. It is the same with property developers.," he said.

He added all these problems would be a thing of the past if the BN were returned to power in Selangor.

Also present were Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Datuk Seri Noh Omar, BN and Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Deputy Finance Minister and Selangor MCA chairman Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai, Deputy Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Datuk M. Saravanan, Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Senator Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz and IPF president Datuk M Sambanthan
